Essay #1: Sucka!

3.5-4 pages, MLA style, double-space

Background
The world is a complex place, full of false truths and fictions that look like facts. Some of this come from those who actively and intentionally wish to deceive us, while other misleading or just plain inaccurate information passes as truth simply because we want it to be true. With urban legends, unscrupulous marketing, scams, governmental propaganda, and the superstitions and baseless assumptions we grow up with, we cannot help being, from time to time and to one degree or another, suckers. At some point in our lives weÕve all been duped, learning (or not!) the hard way that all is not as it seems, leaving us looking like a fool or suffering even worse consequences for trusting in that which should not be trusted.
Your Assignment
For your first English 848 paper, try to develop an answer to the following question:

When and why am I (or was I) a sucker, falling for a lie or a hoax, believing in a superstition, accepting a legend or urban legend as factual, getting scammed or cheated? Be honest. Describe such an instance or several either related or contrasting such instances in enough detail and with enough contextual information. Then, explain why you understood this (or these) falsehood(s) to be true.

1.  Who is my audience and how can I make my ideas clear and convincing to it?
2. What is my thesis and is it the best answer I have to the question?
3.  Why did I choose each of the examples I will develop in the essay?
Are my paragraphs PIE?
